Employment rate rises

In December Venezuela's unemployment rate closed at 8.4 percent, which was down from 8.9 percent a year ago. The government is Venezuela's largest employer and provides jobs for nearly 2 million people. People in part-time jobs or pursuing studies in aren’t included in employment surveys.

Chavez rethinks plan to rename country

Hugo Chavez, at his swearing in on January 8, decided he wanted to emphasize his socialist revolution by renaming Venezuela's official name to "Socialist Republic of Venezuela". Instead he has changed his mind and the official name will remain the "Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela". The name is in honor of Simon Bolivar, the Venezuela-born Liberator of most of Spanish South America.

Venezuelans protest new Chavez plan

Hundreds of Venezuelans protested on Tuesday against a new plan that essentially gives Hugo Chavez total power. The protesters don't want to live in a dictatorship. Opposition leaders want their voices to be heard. The interior minister, who resigned from Chavez‘s government in early 2002, told reporters on Tuesdayh: "This is a government with a hypocritical authoritarianism that tries to sell the world certain democratic appearances."

Venezuela and India in talks to build refinery

Petroleos de Venezuela SA, or PDVSA, is Venezuela's state oil company and it's looking to do business with Oil & Natural Gas Corporation of India. India wants oil-rich Venezuela to a build refinery in India. The proposed refinery could potentially produce 900,000 to 1 million barrels of oil daily. Negotiations are still underway.
