Embassies are essential as they are a small representation of their country in another foreign country. Embassies are important to expatriates and tourists who came in conflict with the foreign countries law they're at. Basically, embassies will aid to the help of their countrymen to legal means possible, but what if the embassy itself encounters or violated a foreign law themselves.
